
The Otis O. Washington II Scholarship
The Angel Foundation for Learning will provide a scholarship to a culminating senior of Saginaw United High School who will pursue post-secondary education in Summer/Fall 2025.

The Otis O. Washington II Scholarship may be used to cover tuition and fees, textbooks, required equipment, accommodations, travel to and from school, and other education-related expenses.

Scholarship Criteria
Eligibility Requirements
​
All applicants of The Otis O. Washington II Scholarship must:
​

be enrolled at Saginaw United High School for at least the full Spring semester of their culminating 12th grade year
-
have sufficient credits and GPA to be classified as a culminating 12th-grade student at the time the application is submitted
-
have a cumulative weighted 2.5 GPA, minimum
-
have no discipline referrals or suspensions during the 12th-grade school year and no record of expulsion, as evidenced by written declaration from a SUHS administrator/counselor on SUHS letterhead
-
by May 1 of the graduating school year, be able to present evidence of acceptance into a college/university, trade school, certificate program, or other post-secondary academic program as a full-time student. Evidence of enrollment must be submitted to the Scholarship Selection Committee before the release of scholarship funds.

submit two signed letters of recommendation - 1 from a non-family member and 1 letter on letterhead from a current SUHS or college teacher/administrator/counselor who has known the applicant for at least a year and can speak to their character, their intended academic/career aspirations, and how they serve the community or individuals in need.

submit a fully completed scholarship application through the application portal with the required documents by the posted deadline. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered nor will they be eligible for resubmission once submitted.

Additional Information

The 3 finalists will complete a virtual interview with the Scholarship Selection Committee of The Angel Foundation for Learning. To participate in the interview, the candidate must be able to provide their own device with a working camera, access to the communication platform used for the interview (e.g., Google Meet, Zoom, etc.), and a place where the interview will be uninterrupted for approximately 30 minutes.

All application materials submitted become the property of The Angel Foundation for Learning and will not be returned to applicants.

The recipient of The Otis O. Washington II Scholarship must agree to sign a photo/media release, allowing their image and likeness to be used for TV, social media, print media, and promotional materials for The Angel Foundation for Learning without compensation. If the applicant does not begin school/training by Fall 2025, the Scholarship is forfeited to the 2nd rated applicant.

All applicants must submit, with their completed application, the following documents by Friday, January 3, 2025 11:59 PM (EST)

An unofficial high school transcript, including current courses, with a counselor signature or registrar seal

If college courses have been taken or are in progress, an unofficial transcript from that institution

Two letters of recommendation (see above)

A letter from the school guidance counselor, affirming that the applicant has had no discipline referrals or suspensions during the 12th grade year and no record of expulsion from K-12. This letter must be provided on Saginaw United High School letterhead.

Evidence of official acceptance into a college/university or other post-secondary educational program

The applicant's original essay of 300-700 words, which should address the following:

*where you intend to attend school/training (if undecided, please explain briefly)

*why The Otis O. Washington II Scholarship is important to you

*after reviewing information on The Angel Foundation for Learning website, the internet, or speaking with a member of Otis' family/a friend, share how the life of Otis O. Washington II has inspired you.

*include any academic and non-academic accomplishments that align with the character, interests, or accomplishments of Otis O. Washington II, including any personal characteristics or experiences that make you uniquely worthy to represent The Angel Foundation for Learning and the legacy of Otis O. Washington II.

Hello! I'm Breanna McKelvin, a high school senior hailing from Los Angeles, CA.

My primary identity is that I am an artist. From doodling to music-making and sewing my own clothes, creating has always been my passion. As I delved deeper into art,
I expanded my skills through classes and focused on my favorite mediums.
​
Collaborating with Ms. Krystal to design the logo for the Otis O. Washington II Scholarship
has been a rewarding experience, fueling my ambition for future projects.
I'm excited to continue to pursue my love for creation as I journey
into the future as a college freshman.
